

We should really learn to constantly ask ourselves why, to remind us of our purpose in pursuing medicine and to find more and more reasons to fall in love medicine each and every day. 🙂īecause of the heavy load of med school, we tend to focus more on school work, often not realizing that med school is as much an emotional battle as it is an academic battle. Frankl said in his book, Man’s Search For Meaning, “Those who have a why to live can bear with almost any how.” If we are able to answer this question of why, the answers to all our hows (How will I get through that gruelling exam? How will I manage all the academic load? How will I finish med school?) will follow. But more than asking why outwardly, I think it really helps to throw this exact question inwardly to ourselves: Why do you want to be a doctor? Why are you in medical school?Īs Dr. Time and again, our professors have reminded us that it counts to be a curious medical student and always ask “Why?”.
